ABOUT OUR PANEL

Lucas Segal, senior at LSHS, transitioned from female to male during his freshman year of high school. This past September Segal became involved the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) - competing in the STAR Advocacy event. For his project, he was required to demonstrate his knowledge, skills, and ability to actively identify a local, state, national or global concern, research the topic, identify a target audience and potential partnerships, form an action plan, and advocate for the issue in an effort to positively affect a policy or law. Through his advocacy for the rights of transgender people to use the restroom of the gender with which they identify, he qualified for the 2016 FCCLA National Leadership Conference in San Diego and earned a silver medal.
Segal’s advocacy has opened doors to speak for the Sociology class at his high school as well as a school board meeting. Most recently, one of the judges in San Diego asked Segal to speak at his school. He’s developed a partnership with the Human Rights Campaign and the Arkansas Transgender Equality Coalition. In April, Segal flew to DC to speak at HRC’s major donor summit. Prior to going to San Diego, he was featured in the Sentinel Record. In early 2015, the Human Rights Campaign featured Segal and his mother in Equality Magazine, which is the largest magazine for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender topics. ”Loving Lucas” centered on Lucas and his mother as he went through the transition. “Segal hopes to work as a public speaker and an advocate as he continues to receive invitations for speaking engagements. He plans to compete in another STAR event during his senior year.”
